Du kí ngày nay đã trở thành một hiện tượng văn hóa mang tính toàn cầu, cùng với sự quan tâm của công chúng dành cho thể loại này là việc xuất hiện ngày càng nhiều các công trình nghiên cứu của các học giả. Tuy nhiên, trong các công trình nghiên cứu ấy ta thấy vẫn còn nhiều ý kiến trái chiều về các vấn đề của du kí như thuật ngữ, khái niệm, ranh giới thể loại, tính hư cấu... Bài viết này tìm hiểu hai vấn đề gây nhiều tranh cãi của thể loại du kí là thuật ngữ, khái niệm và tính hư cấu. Song song đó, người viết thiết lập một khái niệm du kí của riêng mình cũng như cố gắng đưa ra một vài kiến giải về tính hư cấu của du kí. Bài viết này góp phần giúp người đọc có cái nhìn toàn diện hơn về một mảng tư liệu vốn gắn liền với những hành trình khám phá vĩ đại của con người trong suốt chiều dài phát triển của lịch sử nhân loại nhưng chưa được giới nghiên cứu quan tâm đúng mức.
