Tự sát cũng như toan tự sát (TTS) ảnh hưởng nặng nề đến sức khỏe tâm thần của vị thành niên (VTN) Việt Nam. Tuy nhiên, các nghiên cứu tâm lí học về chủ đề này còn rất hạn chế trong bối cảnh hiện nay. Nghiên cứu này được tiến hành nhằm mục đích phân tích các đặc điểm tâm lí của hành vi TTS ở VTN. Bằng thiết kế nghiên cứu định tính tập trung vào việc phỏng vấn sâu các trải nghiệm của 5 người tham gia có hành vi TTS cho phép phát hiện một số đặc điểm chung của hành vi này ở độ tuổi VTN: (1) Nhận thức chưa đầy đủ về ý nghĩa của sự sống, giá trị bản thân và mục tiêu cuộc đời; (2) Cảm xúc bùng nổ và kí ức xâm lấn chiếm ưu thế; và (3) Thiếu kết nối xã hội và xu hướng tự cô lập sau sự kiện tự sát bất thành. Đây là cơ sở lí luận và thực hành quan trọng để đề xuất các chiến lược can thiệp và phòng ngừa tâm lí phù hợp cho hành vi này ở Việt Nam.
