USING PORTFOLIO TO ASSESS STUDENTS’ COMPETENCY IN SCIENCE AT SOME PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN HO CHI MINH CITY

ABSTRACT

Assessment is a significant process to determine the quality of teaching and learning, contributing to the adjustment of teaching activities. The 2018 General Education Program requires teachers to apply diverse and flexible methods and tools for a comprehensive assessment of students' learning processes. According to Circular 27 of the Ministry of Education and Training regarding primary school student assessment, evaluating through portfolios, learning products, and activities is mentioned as an assessment method in various subjects and educational activities. However, the using of portfolios to assess students' competency in Science has not been effectively utilized due to various objective and subjective reasons. This article explores the reality of using portfolios in assessing students' competency in Science at some primary schools in Ho Chi Minh City; from there, it offers suggestions to improve the effectiveness of using this tool to assess student capabilities in Science.
